The Lost Fanfic---By Lennox MacDuff---cpmills@indiana.edu HELLOOO KIDS! This is my first fanfiction. Now, I know what you're saying. "Isn't Hakon his first fanfiction?" Well, yes it is, but no it isn't. Hakon is my first _published_ fanfic. This piece I wrote several months earlier, but I never posted it. (I was never very happy with it) The reason that I am posting it now is because several of my devoted fans (yes, I have a few :) have written me asking why I haven't posted anything lately. Well, it's a long story but let's just say that college had been keeping me busy. If you check, you'll notice that all of my other pieces were written right around the summer months. My next piece should be out in a month or two, but to tide you over, here it is! The Lost Fanfic! Complete with my original notes as an aspiring fanfic author! I hope you enjoy it, and please keep in mind that I was just starting to write when I did this. Be kind, it was years ago :) By the way, I really want to thank Chris Rogers for putting up with my incompetence in trying to access the forum. You're a cool guy, Chris! ************************************************************************ ************************************************************************ Anton's Notes---by Lennox MacDuff---cpmills@indiana.edu Summary: In a letter to David Xanatos, Anton Servarius describes his research on the gargoyles. NOTE: This is my first attempt at fan fiction. It's short, and a little dry, but I like it. I wrote this because I wanted to submit SOMETHING, but my first actual story is still in the works. It's called Hakon, and it's pretty cool. Keep an eye out for new (and better) material in the months to come. I always like working out all the little biological nitty-gritty's about the Gargoyles, so I decided to write them up. These are just speculations from my observations of the show, PLEASE don't take offense if you don't agree! As this is written as a scientific journal, it does not have the punch of a story. But, it's still interesting. I have a story in the works, hopefully it will be ready soon. Also, please keep in mind that Anton did not know everything, thus quite a few of his speculations are either not entirely correct or are lucky shots in the dark. Anton could not just take a blood sample from the gargoyles, if he tried Goliath would likely have ripped his face off. As for the legal stuff, if you really think that I created the Gargoyles, then you should also know that you are required to send me one thousand dollars every time you read this story :) Enjoy! --Lennox P.S.-This takes place only a few episodes into the series, before Anton had a chance to toy with our heroes. Think of this as his preliminary observations. <>^<>^<>^<>^<>^<>^<>^<>^<>^<>^<>^<>^<>^<>^<>^<>^<>^<>^<> Mr. Xanatos-- I have, as requested, observed and evaluated the creatures known as "gargoyles". As expected, a full description proved impossible without direct examination and experimentation, but I have learned much through observation and through what the gargoyle known as Demona has told me. Attached is a copy of my notes. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes of Dr. Anton Servarius Subject: "gargoyles" *Physical Structure* The gargoyles vary in height, weight and overall size, however on average they are physically larger than humans. Their bodies vary in form, most having normal humanoid bodies. However, a few would appear to be quadrupeds, having the size and basic appearance of a large dog (although appear to be far more intelligent). The humanoids I have observed all have two legs, arms, wings and a rather powerful tail. Their coloration varies, as do their horns, body sizes, hair color (and existence thereof), and wing structure. Most of them have wings that are attached to their backs near the shoulder blades, but one I have observed has wings stretching along it's body, somewhat like webbing. Indeed, there seem to be three basic wing forms: bat, glider and web. Although the gargoyles I have observed all have humanlike body shapes, information that I have been able to get out of Demona would suggest that their forms may be animal, even reptilian, in nature. She also tells me that wings and the presence of a tail are not absolute. The one quadruped gargoyle I have had the chance to observe is very doglike in nature, with a short snout and tail. It too has horns and spines, these going all the way down it's spine. As far as I can tell, the humanoid gargoyle's spines stop at the end of the scalp. *Talons, Feet and Eyes* Three of the more striking physical traits of the gargoyles are that of their talons, feet and eyes. On average, the gargoyles have three-taloned hands, rather than our four-fingered ones. These talons are remarkably strong, and can be driven into wood, stone and even concrete for the purposes of climbing and tearing. It is uncertain what makes these talons so strong. As they seem to be just as sensitive as our fingers, it cannot be any kind of calluses or exoskeletal structure. Perhaps the bones of these talons are far larger and stronger than those of human fingers. More research is needed. The gargoyles have feet that would be considered gargantuan by human standards. However, gargoyles appear to naturally walk on the balls of their feet, making the feet appear smaller. This seems to be a natural stance, as it does not cause any of the balance loss or muscle fatigue that one would find in humans. The most striking feature of the gargoyles are their eyes. They glow when the gargoyle is angry or frightened. I have my own theory as to why this is so. The gargoyles are, by nature, nocturnal creatures. It is only natural that they would have evolved a kind of night vision. This theory is supported by the fact that, when scared or in battle, the gargoyles would naturally want to see as well as possible. Natural night vision in the form of glowing eyes would do this nicely. *Stone Hibernation* By far the most fascinating physical trait of gargoyles is the fact that, upon sunrise, they turn completely to stone. This daytime hibernation does not seem to require the actual sunlight itself, as I have both witnessed and heard of gargoyles turning to stone while not in contact with sunlight. Also, they turn to stone only when the sun is up on their area of the Earth. A gargoyle might be in stone form in New York, while at the same time one in England or Japan is awake and alert. Perhaps it has to do with the sun's gravitational pull, of solar radiation. At present, their stone hibernation is impossible to explain using conventional science. More research is needed. When the sun sets at the end of the day, the gargoyles burst forth from a thin stone shell. This in itself is fascinating, as it would appear that, until the point just before awakening, they are stone throughout. The gargoyles have a lifespan which is essentially identical to ours, however they do not age while in stone, allowing them to live twice as long. This hibernation also appears to heal most wounds and injuries as if they never existed. This process is not reversible, however. Any damage done to the gargoyles in their stone form is permanent and often results in death. *Psychological Traits* It has been my observation that, with Demona as an exception, the gargoyles are a very family-based society. They live to protect their clan, their home and those they hold dear. Gargoyle children, which are hatched from eggs, are raised by the entire clan. The idea of individual parents seems a foreign one. Question: Is this biological or psychological? Would a gargoyle raised by a human couple accept them as parents? More research is needed. Gargoyles also have been noted to face outward while in stone form, as if their instinct to protect exists even then. In our society, it would also seem to help them hide, considering the large amount of statuary already in the city. Gargoyles are capable of a full range of emotion, from deepest love to fiercest race. Despite their monsterish appearance, they would seem to be lovers of art and culture. Many can read and seem to enjoy this pastime immensely. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- In short, Mr. Xanatos, the gargoyles seem to be, with the exception of a few striking physical differences, identical to humans. They can love and hate, are capable of good and evil, and are able to choose between the two. Being so, I would be delighted if you could obtain a subject for later study. I already have a few tests in mind. I hope you find this research useful. ----Dr. Anton Servarius
